Focusing on Emotional Wellness

October is emotional wellness month, but what is emotional wellness and why is it so important for everyone?  Emotional wellness incorporates the feeling of happiness and success. It is learning how to cope with the ups and downs of life, managing challenges, having control of your life, and knowing one’s sense of purpose.  When a person is emotionally well they work to contribute more effectively in their community, parenting, and relationships. Read on to learn more about how many people suffer from mental health stressors and tips to improve one’s emotional wellness.

Mental Health America (MHA) reports that over 40 million Americans suffer from at least one mental health problem.  Prolonged untreated mental health problems may lead to more severe psychological and physical health conditions such as:
  • Insomnia
  • Hypertension
  • Headaches
  • shortness of breath
  • impulsivity
  • muscle aches.

Mindfulness, along with a healthy lifestyle, and stress management can help a person cope with mental health problems.

Treatment can include:
  • medication
  • healthy habits
  •  counseling
Make life better by establishing healthy habits. To encourage holistic health, focus on healthy habits which make a person feel good!
  • Mindfulness:  Be mindful, focus on the specific moment you are in.
  • Journaling:  Write down joys
  • Meditate/Yoga
  • Laugh!  Laughing releases, the happy juice — endorphins.
  • Say “NO” without guilt.  Learning to set boundaries and making time for self-care is imperative
  • Read Books
  • Seek therapy
  • Communicate with others your feelings and needs.
  • Focus on the good
