More than twice as many women are diagnosed with thyroid cancer each year as compared to men. Roughly 1,000 of those women die from it.

Do you know where your thyroid gland is? The thyroid is located at the front of the neck, on either side. It is responsible for hormone regulation and weight control. It helps children grow tall and develop muscle, as well.

What Causes Thyroid Cancer?

It’s not clear what causes thyroid cancer, but according to the CDC, being exposed to too much radiation in the neck area, especially at a young age, might be a contributing factor. Additionally, certain genetic traits passed down from your parents might also play a role.

How Do I Recognize Symptoms?

If you have any of the following symptoms, see your doctor immediately:

• Trouble breathing or swallowing
• A hoarse voice
• Most commonly, a lump or swelling on the side of your neck

In 2013, HGTV celebrity real estate agent and house-flipper, Tarek El Moussa, was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. It was brought to his attention by a fan of the show, who also happened to be a nurse. She wrote in to El Moussa’s producer and, sure enough, he was diagnosed with cancer after seeking medical attention.

While any type of cancer is scary, thyroid cancer is treatable. Of the 45,000 diagnosed yearly, more than 95% percent seek treatment and do recover. If you think something is irregular with your thyroid gland, talk with your doctor immediately.
