Including You: Spread the Word to End the Word

Words are incredible. They have the capabilities to make us feel good about ourselves, confident in our abilities, and loved by others… but they can also hurt us and tear us down.

Including You is brought to you by the Tuscarawas County Board of Developmental Disabilities.

Sticks and stones may break your bones, but words will never hurt you… right? Wrong. Over time it’s become clear that some words are inappropriate, incorrect, outdated, and downright cruel.

The Special Olympics have joined with youth leaders for a campaign to end the use of the word “retard(ed).” Instead, Special Olympic athletes encourage using  a new r-word: RESPECT.

It is hurtful and demeaning toward people with disabilities to use the r-word. A key step in ending the hateful speech aimed at those with disabilities is addressing peers, coworkers, and kids when they use this hurtful language.

You can take the pledge to not use the r-word when you visit, and encourage those around you to do the same. For more information, visit the Special Olympics website.
