Kick Off 2021 With Some Healthy & Achievable Goals!

Setting goals is essential to living a healthy, fulfilling life! Follow these tips to help you set and achieve yours!

This is Public Health is brought to you in partnership with the Tuscarawas County Health Department.

According to Harvard Medical School, people spend much of their earlier life focused on setting goals. At first these goals are both personal and professional, but as one gets older, the desire to set and accomplish goals lessens. In order to keep your mental and physical skills sharp it’s important to continue setting goals!

1.) Find Your Purpose

Prioritize and determine what matters to you right now. Goals need a purpose and a desired result. Connect your goals with a specific, meaningful outcome. “I want to start running” isn’t enough. “I want to run a 5K in two months” is attainable and measurable.

2.) Have SMART Goals

After you’ve decided on a goal or goals, it’s important to apply the SMART method to those ideas. Smart stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound. SMART goals ensure credibility.

Goals need to be clear and detailed (Specific). You should have a timeline (Measurable) for your realistic (Attainable) goals. Does your goal help you achieve a purpose that is important to you right now (Relevant)? Is it something you can handle and take on right now (Time-bound)? These are all important questions to ask when setting goals.

3.) Overcome Obstacles

We often fail to achieve our goals because we’re too busying talking ourselves out of them. Be creative and find ways to overcome physical or mental roadblocks. You can always change your approach. You may also change your mind. Every experience is a learning experience and you may realize that your original purpose and goal weren’t passions of yours at all.

Wondering how to stay focused when setting and working toward goals?

  • Break larger goals into smaller, more manageable goals. Celebrate your successes along the way!
  • Reward yourself and share your accomplishments- everyone loves positive feedback.
  • Keep track of your progress and ask a loved one to act as an accountability partner.
  • Use visual reminders- such as photos or a calendar countdown- to keep you motivated.
