Library Receives Grant for Teen Summer Programs

A library in Tuscarawas County is gearing up for the launch of Teen Tuesday events.

IMG_7983The Dover Public Library’s summer Teen Tuesday events will begin on Tuesday, June 19 in the Library’s Community Room. All events are open to teens entering grades 6-12 and begin at 2:00 PM. Registration is not required for these weekly programs, sponsored by the 2018 YALSA/Dollar General Summer Learning Resources Grant. Patrons can call the Library at 330-343-6123 for more information on each program.

“We’re very excited about our line-up for ‘Vámonos/Let’s Go,’ our Teen Summer Reading Program,” explained Teen/Outreach Services Manager Liz Strauss. “With the 2018 YALSA/Dollar General Summer Learning Resources Grant, we are able to reach out to our Spanish speaking teens with bilingual-themed programming designed to give teens a place to practice their language skills, either Spanish or English, throughout the summer.”

The 2018 YALSA/Dollar General Summer Learning Resources Grant is providing funds for bilingual games and resources, including new Kindle Fire tablets, as well as craft supplies for the Dover Public Library’s Teen Tuesday events this summer.

Teen Tuesdays kick off on June 19 with a special Anime Convention. This event is inspired by popular comic-con events around the country. Teens can create their own fan art, play games, and more!

The fun continues on June 26 with a Duolingo Party featuring new Kindle Fire tablets. Teens will be able to try Duolingo, a popular and free language-learning app. Other bilingual games and crafts will also be available.

Two Let’s Play events on July 3 and July 17 will feature more bilingual and vocabulary board games to help teens improve their Spanish or English skills. Games include Turista Mexicano, KLOO’s Race to Madrid, Dabble, and Word Slam.

Teens will meet on the Dover High School lawn for a Play with Water event on July 10. Participants are instructed to bring their own water gun, a towel, and a change of clothes. In case of rain, board games will be available in the Community Room. After the water activities, participants can make their own ice cream. This special event is open to tweens and teens ages eight and up. Although registration is still not required to attend, it is recommended so that everyone can make and enjoy ice cream.

Tuesday, July 24, there will be a Make Music event just for teens featuring different musical instruments and apps. Teen participants can bring their own instruments to show or play with one of several on loan to the Library for the event.

Teen Tuesdays will end with a Graffiti Party on July 31. Each participant will receive a white t-shirt to decorate with fabric markers at this outdoor event. Teens can let their creativity run wild as they decorate their shirts and sign others’ shirts to commemorate the summer. All materials will be supplied by Grant funds. If preferred, participants can bring their own white or light-colored t-shirts to decorate. In case of rain, this event will be held in the Story Room. Registration is recommended for this program so that the Library can provide a shirt for everyone who wants to participate.
