Parents Listen Up: Are you aware of dry scooping?

There’s a dangerous fitness trend called ‘dry scooping’ and it’s sweeping TikTok and putting our teens and young adults at risk.

“Dry-scooping” has gained traction on Reddit for the last few months, but is now hitting TikTok by storm. According to the videos, “dry-scooping” involves eating a scoop of pre-workout energy powder without diluting it in water. The idea is that this maximizes the effects of the amino acids, B vitamins, caffeine, and creatine in the supplement.

However, reports indicate some young people have been rushed to the hospital, one even reporting a kind of heart attack at just 20-years-old. The heart attack victim reported having what is known as a non-ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI). NSTEMI, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is usually less damaging to your heart because the artery hasn’t been completely blocked off.

Pre-Workout Supplements

Reports indicate that some supplement powders can contain as much as 250 milligrams of caffeine…per scoop. That’s nearly three times more than what’s in a cup of coffee. And, without diluting that in water, as instructed, the individual receives an even more concentrated form of the ingredients.

Other Dry-Scooping-Risks

Not only can an individual give themselves a heart attack with this trend, dry-scooping is also a major choking hazard. Reports have also been made related to this side effect as well. One young woman reported she stopped breathing when she tried to swallow.

Experts encourage individuals to seek advice from their healthcare provider before ever blindly joining a TikTok health trend.
