On Monday, U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) voted to protect life by supporting the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act.
The bill restricts abortions on unborn children after the 20-week mark, the point at which scientific evidence tells us an unborn child can feel pain. The latest Marist Poll found that more than six in 10 Americans – by a 66-33 margin – support a ban on abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy. Portman issued the following statement:
“The U.S. is one of just seven nations that allows abortions after five months of pregnancy. This legislation would protect unborn babies and make a strong statement that we value all life. I’m disappointed that this important legislation was blocked by Senate Democrats. While members have differing views on abortion, we should at least be able to agree that if an unborn child has reached the point where he or she can feel pain, that child’s life deserves protection. The sanctity of life is fundamental, and I am committed to protecting it.”
NOTE: Portman has consistently voted to protect the unborn and has a 100% pro-life voting record from National Right to Life Committee. He is also the author the Child Custody Protection Act, which would make it a federal offense to transport a minor across a state line for an abortion if it would circumvent a state law requiring parental involvement in that minor’s abortion.
