Road Trip Season Ahead!

As everyone gears up for summer, road trip season is just ahead, and that often means meals on the go that are not always the most healthy. But what if there was a way to prepare in advance for each trip. Many people travel by car either to visit family, see their favorite sites or experience new ones, or drive to various activities. Either way, a lot of time is spent in the car. Read on to learn about the number of calories often consumed on a road trip and tips to add in healthier options.

Many times, it is more convenient to go through the McDonald’s drive-through than meal prep for a trip. However, here are a list of common meals purchased and the number of calories in that meal.

  • 10-piece chicken nugget, medium fry, and large coke is 1,030 calories
  • A quarter pounder with cheese, medium fry, and large coke is 1,130 calories
  • Large McCafé Iced Coffee is 260 calories

Keep in mind the average adult should consume approximately 2,500 a day according to the U.S. Dietary Guidelines.

So what are some options to keep the high-calorie meals at bay during a road trip? Add in any of these snacking options to curb cravings while sitting in the car.

  • Dairy: cheese sticks, yogurt pouches, travel-sized milk
  • Vegetables: celery sticks, carrot sticks, peppers, salsa
  • Fruits: strawberries, blueberries, grapes, pineapple cups, applesauce pouches, apples
  • Protein: sliced meats, nut butter, hummus, nuts, hard-boiled eggs
  • Grains: whole wheat bread or crackers, oatmeal energy bars, air-popped popcorn, rice cakes
  • Hydration: water first for thirst

Also, factor in time to get out of the car in stretch those legs. It is easy to want to drive straight through, but the movement is important for our bodies.
