(Newcomerstown, Ohio) – The free event will take place in Newcomerstown on Saturday.
To promote vehicle passenger safety awareness, the Tuscarawas County Health Department is partnering with Wendy’s restaurant, Safe Communities of Tuscarawas County, Ohio Buckles Buckeyes, the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office, and the Newcomerstown Police Department to host Wendy’s Safety Day on Saturday, September 26th from 10:30 am to 1:30 pm at the Newcomerstown Wendy’s. Throughout this free event, participants will be able to receive a seatbelt safety check and a car seat safety check (for those with infants and young children). All event activities will be conducted in a drive-up fashion and with full COVID-19 safety measures in place.
“According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), car crashes are a leading cause of death for children, and events like these allow us to work with local families to ensure everyone is using car seats and seatbelts properly,” explained Kelly Snyder, Child Passenger Safety Technician and Safe Communities Coordinator for the Tuscarawas County Health Department (TCHD). “Many times, injuries and deaths can be prevented through the proper use of car seats, boosters, and seatbelts. We are hoping for a great turnout at this event so that we can help area residents travel as safely as possible in motor vehicles.”
In 2019, TCHD child passenger safety technicians (CPST) provided 93 complimentary car seat checks and found that 69% of the car seats were installed incorrectly. When a car seat is incorrectly installed, the CPSTs assist parents with learning to install the car seats correctly. Additionally, families in need may qualify to receive a free car seat through the Ohio Buckles Buckeyes program. In 2019, TCHD supplied 156 car seats or booster seats to area families.
September 20-26th is National Child Passenger Safety Week.
