Sleep Well, Mama: Expert Tips to Develop Healthy Sleep Habits

As moms sleep can sometimes be hard to come by, but what if studies told us how crucial sleep is for our bodies? The CDC calls healthy sleep habits, good sleep hygiene. Read on to learn more about how to develop healthy sleep habits, and why they are important to have every day.

Tips to get better sleep:
  • Be consistent. Go to bed at the same time each night and get up at the same time each morning
  • Make sure your bedroom is quiet, dark, relaxing, and at a comfortable temperature
  • Remove electronic devices, such as TVs, computers, and smartphones, from the bedroom
  • Avoid large meals, caffeine, and alcohol before bedtime
  • Physical activity or exercise during the day can help you fall asleep more easily at night.
  • If you can’t fall asleep after 20 minutes get out of bed quietly and try a relaxing activity to put your mind at ease.

When you are building your healthy sleep habits you will notice a change in your mood, behaviors, and potentially a desire to do other healthy activities. Good sleep habits as with any changes take time. Practice for at least for a month, and try your best to stay the course.

Don’t forget to:
  • Turn off electronics 30 minutes before bedtime.
  • Use your bed only for sleeping and sex.
  • Get 7-8 hours of sleep each day.
  • Decrease fluid intake closer to bed.

With all that being said, Sunday is Spring forward with our clocks!
