Ohio has changed its report card system for grading schools. There aren’t any more letter grades (A-F). In its place, we’ll be utilizing a star system in which schools can earn up to five stars in each category. Three stars is considered passable to the State’s expectations.
The goal for the star system was to be easier to understand for parents and professionals in the education system. (For instance, there was a negative stigma for receiving a ‘C’, though it meant average.)
The Star System Explained
The Ohio Department of Education wanted a system that was much easier for parents to understand and teachers could communicate expectations better. Hence, the star system was born.
It measures these categories for each school:
- Achievement
- Progress
- Early Literacy
- Gap Closing
- Graduation
- Readiness (college, career, workforce, military)
