The investigation continues, but authorities have confirmed the death of 13-year-old Keith Simons following a self-inflicted gunshot wound at Jackson Memorial Middle School on Tuesday.
Investigators note the teen entered the building before classes began, went into a bathroom and shot himself.
The incident initiated a district-wide lockdown for most of the day on Tuesday and spurred fear among parents and the community.
Both police and school officials have said they believed this was an isolated incident and that there is no danger to students or staff.
Classes resumed as normal on Wednesday.
“Our goal is to maintain the normalcy of the school day. Please be sensitive to misinformation circulating through social media,” school officials explained in a post to the district’s Facebook page.
