Finding Your Tribe: Essential Tips for Building Community Connections

If you have been around this page long enough, you know that finding your tribe or group of people is super important to us. Sometimes family is included, other times it’s not. Your tribe can be people you met at an event or through the current stage of life you are in. But why is it important to have a tribe? Read on to learn about the importance and tips for fostering connections.

Healthy Tip Tuesday is brought to you in partnership with Trinity Health Systems.

We’re social beings, and we are not meant to live in isolation. Community is critical for us to thrive; it also engages our positive mental health.

What can your tribe provide:
  • Belonging: If you’ve ever felt like you don’t fit in, you know it can be a lonely experience. It can provide a sense of belonging — a group you identify as being a part of.
  • Support: Who do you turn to when you need something? Having people you can call on when you need to talk or need help with something can help you through difficult situations.
  • Purpose: You might be the friend who enjoys cooking and can be counted on to bring a hot meal over when someone is going through something. Or you’re the friend who others know they can call when they need to talk about their struggles. These roles can give you a sense of purpose by bettering other people’s lives.

Tips for building your tribe:
  • Seeking out others who have the same interests as you. Maybe that is a book club, board games, working out, etc.
  • Identifying your values, and walking with others who have those same values. Perhaps that is volunteering at the same animal shelter, or for the same civic organization.
  • If you have spiritual beliefs, find a faith and/or church that you want to attend. This is a great way to build a tribe. You can join their small groups or Sunday schools.

At the end of the day, we all have to remember that no one’s tribe is one size fits all. It can be difficult to find what works best for us, and our busy schedules. Be patient and know that there is somebody out there for everyone.
