Lawsuit Filed Against Canton City School District

The mother of a teen seen on cellphone video footage being slammed to the ground by a teacher is suing the school district.

The cellphone footage was taken on December 4th, 2016. It shows a McKinley High School student being thrown to the ground by a teacher following an apparent verbal altercation.

The mother of the student filed a lawsuit in federal court seeking $1.5 million. The suit claims the school district violated the student’s rights including his right to due process, against unreasonable seizer and by creating a harassing, intimidating and discriminatory environment among other issues.

The Canton City School District addressed the situation shortly after the footage was made public. Administrators explained Kenneth Weatherbee’s actions were far outside the standard protocol of the district. The teacher, 48-year-old Weatherbee resigned on January 4th.
