National Pet Emergency Preparedness Month: Because our pets are family too

When emergencies happen, our first instinct is to protect our families— and that includes our pets! June is National Pet Emergency Preparedness Month, a great reminder to make sure your furry family members are included in your emergency plans.

This information is brought to you in partnership with the Tuscarawas County Health DepartmentStop by the Health Department for their free drive-thru pet emergency preparedness bag pick-up event: Tuesday, June 30th 3pm-6pm (more information below)

Just like people, pets rely on preparation to stay safe during unexpected events like severe weather, power outages, or evacuations. Having a plan in place ahead of time can make a stressful situation much more manageable.

Be Ready Before an Emergency

One of the most important steps is putting together a pet emergency kit.

Putting together a kit with crucial documents, food, water, and comfort items can be critical in making sure your pet is taken care of in the case of an emergency. Making sure your pet has proper identification, such as a collar tag or microchip, is critical for ensuring your animal can always make its’ way back to you if you get separated during that emergency.

Make a Plan

Know where your pet can go if you need to leave your home quickly. Not all shelters accept pets, so it’s helpful to identify pet-friendly hotels, friends, or family members ahead of time.

Keep Them Safe

During an emergency, never leave pets behind. If it’s not safe for you, it’s not safe for them either. Keeping them close and calm can help prevent injuries and make the situation easier to manage.

A Little Preparation Goes a Long Way

National Pet Emergency Preparedness Month is a simple reminder that a little planning now can make a big difference later. By preparing ahead of time, you can help ensure your pets stay safe, comfortable, and cared for—no matter what comes your way.
