(Dover, Ohio) – The $46.2 million high school construction continues as students prepare to head back to class for the 2018-2019 school year. Where will they park?
When students make their way to the high school on Tuesday, August 21st, construction will be in full swing. It’s all happening around the current high school on Walnut Street and multiple parking lots students used in the past, are no longer accessible. Superintendent Carla Birney has noted that parking has been top of mind for staff since the project broke ground last school year. “Parking will be limited at the high school for the next 18 months,” she said.
The district has made changes to areas around the district’s central office to try to accommodate school employees and officials note premium parking will be available near Dover High School for the 2018-2019 school year. There is also off-site parking nearby and within walking distance of the building that will likely be used by construction workers.
School representatives explained that the ongoing project is not going to affect school bus pick up or drop off in anyway. Students will still be dropped off on the Sixth Street side and on Walnut Street.
Access to the building will be through the front door and officials confirmed that students will also be able to use two doors on the Sixth Street side of the building in the morning. As for parking for basketball games and other gym extracurriculars this winter, school administration confirmed parking will be available in the administration building parking lot and on the street. Visitors will also enter the gymnasium from the Sixth Street side of the building.
As part of the multimillion-dollar project, work continues on a new 176,766-square-foot-facility, which is expected to be finished in late fall 2019.
Birney also noted that something non-parking related she hopes will receive some attention is the District-wide School Safety Night at the high school on September 12th. “All families are encouraged to attend an informational night about safety measures for students and families both at home and school,” explained Birney. “As safety is a top priority for all of us, we feel this night is an important event and time well spent.”
A variety of speakers and demonstrations are planned for the event, which will begin at 7:00 p.m.
