If you’ve ever searched for childcare in the state of Ohio, you may have noticed childcare centers with a banner promoting their star rating from Step Up To Quality (SUTQ). What does that star rating mean when it comes to caring for your kids? How many stars is best? Does a low star rating mean it’s a bad program?
What is Step Up To Quality (SUTQ)?
Step Up To Quality (SUTQ) is a five-star quality rating and improvement system that recognizes and promotes early learning and development programs that exceed minimum health and safety licensing regulations. Any child care program wishing to provide publicly funded child care must be a star-rated program or meet an exemption.
This system is administered by the Ohio Department of Education and the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS). In short, if a childcare provider wishes to be granted state funding, they have to maintain a 3, 4, or 5-star rating!
