With over 30 degrees to choose from, Kent State University (KSU) at Tuscarawas has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English. Â This degree offers all of the courses at the Tuscarawas campus as well as some virtual online options.
Major Focus on English
The degree program gives students the tools to understand:
- Demonstrate specialized knowledge/skills in three area of study: historical; writing and language; and genre studies, cultural studies and literary theory.
- Develop research tools and methods in the field of English studies.
- Expand reading skills that emphasize careful analytical and critical thought.
- Produce literary and non-literary texts with attention to academic conventions regarding format, documentation, style, etc.
- Read and understand a variety of critical theories and apply these to the study of literature.
- Write, with a special emphasis on interpretive and evaluative writing about texts in a variety of critical formats.
- Master basic literary research methods and build awareness of rhetorical context and discourse functions.

Choose a Concentration
There are 3 different concentrations an English major may select:
- The General concentration allows students to combine elective choices in creative writing, professional writing, rhetoric, historical literature, genre studies and literary theory based on personal interest.
- The Literature concentration emphasizes the interpretation of literary texts drawn from a variety of historical and cultural contexts. Students develop an understanding of genre conventions and different theoretical and critical methods of analysis.
- The Professional Writing concentration offers courses in professional writing, editing, and rhetoric. The concentration requires a professional experience elective fulfilled by an internship, service-learning placement or an advanced course in editing.

Boost toward a Master’s Degree
- English students may apply early to the M.A. degree in English and double count 9 credit hours of graduate courses toward both degree programs.
